My brother's freezer full of soup changed how I shop

I was helping him move apartments in Cleveland last fall and saw he had about 15 identical containers of homemade vegetable soup in his freezer. He said he makes a giant pot for under $12 every other Sunday, using whatever cheap veggies are on sale. He eats it for lunch all week and freezes the rest. I started doing the same thing with a basic bean and potato stew. I spend maybe $15 on ingredients and get 10 meals out of it. Has anyone else found a specific 'big batch' recipe that actually saves you real money?

But does it really save that much money when you factor in the power to run the freezer all month?

My buddy Mark made a huge batch of those last month. He froze like six portions in those cheap plastic containers. Said he forgot about one in the back for almost two months. Thawed it out last week, heated it up, and swore it tasted exactly the same as the day he made it. The texture was still good, nothing got weird or mushy. He's sold on it now.
