My grandma watched me cook rice once and told me I was wasting half the bag
She said I was rinsing it too long and pouring the cloudy water down the drain, which she claimed was stealing food from my own plate. Now I rinse it twice in a bowl and use that water for the pot, and a $3 bag lasts us almost two weeks. Anybody else get a cooking tip from an older relative that sounded cheap at first but actually worked?
Watched my buddy do the exact same thing his mom taught him, and I laughed at him for it until I tried it myself. He keeps a bowl in the sink, rinses the rice two or three times, then dumps that cloudy water right into the pot instead of down the drain. Says the dust and bits that come off are just food he already paid for, so why throw it out. His rice comes out the same, maybe even a little better, and his bag stretches way longer than mine ever did. I still rinse over the sink half the time out of habit, but when I remember, I do it his way. Old people didn't get cheap for no reason, they just hated wasting anything.
