Update: I found out a family of 4 can eat on $85 a week and I don't know if I buy it
Last Tuesday a coworker told me her sister feeds four people on $85 a week at the Aldi in Toledo, and I flat out did not believe her. I pulled up the USDA food plans and the lowest one is around $194 a week for that same size family, so the $85 number sounds wild to me. On one hand maybe she is cooking every single meal from dry beans and rice and hitting sales hard. On the other hand I wonder if she is leaving out stuff she already had in her pantry or counting a garden harvest. My own grocery run last week came to $132 for just me and my husband, and I thought I was being careful. So who is right here, is $85 a week for four people real or is she fudging the math somewhere?
I used to call BS on numbers like that too until I watched my sister do it, she plans every meal around what's on sale and buys almost nothing pre made. The $85 is real but it takes a ton of work and zero convenience food, so it's not really the same as a normal grocery run.
