The hostel owner who said my packing list was for wimps

A guy running a hostel in Lisbon called my 40L bag a beginner setup and told me to ditch half of it. He said I was carrying six shirts for a 10 day trip, and that was just fear. I cut it down to 25L, ditched the backup shoes, and did laundry once with bar soap in a sink. Has anyone else gotten real world feedback that made them repack last minute before a flight?
