I was planning a trip to Tokyo for next spring and started checking hostel rates. Found out that a dorm bed in Shinjuku can run $40-50 a night during peak season. That's wild to me because I paid $15 for a similar spot in Thailand two years ago. I checked a few comparison sites like Hostelworld and Booking.com to confirm. Has anyone else found decent budget lodging in Tokyo that doesn't break the bank?

Lost my passport in a hostel in Prague. Nightmare.

Was in Prague last summer. Staying at a big hostel near the square. Got back late from a pub crawl. Next morning my passport wasn't in my bag. Must have left it out. Panicked hard. Had to go to the embassy. Cost me $150 for an emergency replacement. Plus missed my train to Vienna. Has anyone dealt with a lost passport abroad? How'd you handle it?

I found $7 flights by being awake at 3 AM on a Tuesday

So I was booking a trip from Austin to Denver last month and the prices kept jumping around. I read some random blog that said airlines adjust fares at weird hours when nobody's shopping. At 3 AM on a Tuesday I checked Kayak and saw a flight for $7 plus taxes. I bought it right then for $32 total. The same flight was $140 by noon that day. Has anyone else caught crazy deals like that from just checking at the wrong time?

Some backpacker in the common room was bragging he spent $600 on flights to Europe because he booked last minute. Meanwhile I booked mine 6 months out for $340 round trip through a budget airline. Does anyone else plan that far ahead or am I just cheap?

Friend swore by hostel dorms in Europe. I hated it.

My buddy Jake told me hostels are the only way to save money in Paris. I booked a 12-bed dorm for $35 a night. Third night, someone stole my sneakers while I slept. Never again. Has anyone else had a bad hostel experience that made you switch to cheap hotels?

I used to just bring a regular bath towel from home on trips. It took forever to dry and I'd get charged $5 every time I wanted a fresh one at hostels. Three years ago on a trip to the Smoky Mountains, I grabbed a $25 sleeping bag from Walmart instead of my usual $150 REI one. Everyone on this sub raves about high-end gear for comfort, but that cheap bag kept me warm at 40 degrees at a campsite near Gatlinburg. I get that durability matters for long hauls, but for a weekend trip why blow cash on something you use twice a year? Has anyone else had good luck with box store gear for short trips?

The week my budget vacation turned into a $400 plumbing disaster in a tiny Airbnb

Tried those flight price alert apps and thought they were all scams. One actually saved me $200.

For years I assumed those apps just track your searches to jack up prices later. But last month I used Skyscanner's price alert for a flight to Portland. Got a notification at 2am that the fare dropped from $340 to $140. Booked it right there and the price never went back down. Anyone have similar luck with a specific app or did I just get lucky?

Tried sleeping on a train station bench in Brussels to save hostel money

I had a 6 hour layover in Brussels last spring and figured I'd just crash on a bench near the ticket machines instead of booking a room. Woke up to a security guard tapping my shoulder at 3am telling me I couldn't sleep there or they'd call the cops. Ended up at a 24/7 McDonald's drinking a 1 euro coffee till my train left. Anyone else get burned trying to rough it in a European train station?

My cousin laughed at me for booking a hotel near the airport in Bangkok

I checked his stat against my last 8 flights and my cheapest ticket was booked at 47 days, but my most expensive was at 52 days, so is that 54 day rule just luck or does someone have data to back it up?

I was sitting at a cafe last week and heard these two kids talking about how they found a hostel for 20 bucks a night near Termini station. They were so proud of themselves. But I know that area well and I bet that place has bedbugs and shared bathrooms with no hot water after 8 AM. I wanted to tell them that spending a little more, maybe 40 or 50 bucks, gets you a private room in a clean pensione with breakfast included. Has anyone else seen friends get burned by bargain hunting in big tourist cities?

Used to hate flight deals with layovers, now I love them

I always avoided flights with layovers because I thought they were a waste of time. That hostel in Lisbon with the free walking tour that wasn't free

I booked a bed at a hostel in Lisbon last spring because they advertised a free walking tour. We all met in the lobby at 10 AM, and the guide walked us around for about 20 minutes before stopping at a pastel de nata shop. He said the tour was free, but we had to buy a pastry at each stop to hear the history. I ended up spending 18 euros on custard tarts I didn't even want. Has anyone else run into these pseudo-free tours that are really just ad walks?
