Spent $60 on fancy dotted notebooks and went right back to a 99 cent composition book
Last year I bought into the hype and grabbed three of those pricey dotted notebooks at $20 each, thinking the paper would magically make my spreads look clean. Six months in, the pages were still ghosting my markers, the dots were too faint to see under my lamp, and I was scared to mess up a $20 book so I barely wrote in it. Meanwhile the 99 cent composition book from the drugstore has thicker paper, and I don't care if I ruin a page. I wasted $60 plus shipping to learn that the notebook was never the problem, my fear of messing up was. Has anyone else gone back to cheap notebooks after trying the popular ones?
Oh man, I feel this in my bones. I bought one of those $18 dotted journals with the thick cover and told myself it would fix my messy handwriting somehow, like the paper was gonna teach me penmanship. Two weeks later I was back to a spiral notebook from the dollar store because I spent more time worrying about which pen wouldn't bleed through than actually writing anything down. My wife still brings it up every time we pass the office supply aisle. Nothing humbles you faster than realizing you paid twenty bucks for a book you're too scared to write in. Meanwhile the cheap ones just work and you can scribble whatever you want without a care.
That line about paying twenty bucks for a book you're too scared to write in is too real. I read somewhere that fancy journals actually sell way more than people who finish them, which makes sense when half of us are just hoarding them like fancy soap.
