My custom bookshelf decided to lean like the Tower of Pisa mid-build
I was putting together a tall bookshelf for a living room job. All the cuts seemed perfect, but when I stood it up, it leaned badly to one side. I spent an hour checking my level, thinking the floor was wonky. Turns out, I mixed up two support pieces that looked alike but were slightly different lengths. They were off by an eighth of an inch, which made all the difference. I had to take half of it apart to swap them. Now I label every piece with painter's tape as I cut. This saves me from headaches and clients thinking I'm making modern art.

Ever thought of writing the measurements right on the tape too? Then even if two pieces look close, the numbers won't lie.

Yeah it's funny how often we trust our eyes over the numbers. I see it all the time, like when you're sure you added enough salt just by looking but the dish comes out bland. @carr.robin is onto something, putting the numbers right there stops that guesswork. It's a little fix that points to a bigger thing, our brains take shortcuts and get it wrong. Hard data beats a gut feeling every time, whether you're building a shelf or just trying to double a recipe. Saves so much hassle from small mistakes piling up lol.

Used to trust my eyes too, but numbers don't lie.
