Pro tip: stop drilling pilot holes into brick at the top of a ladder
Honestly I see guys do this on almost every install and it drives me nuts. Last Tuesday I was on a two story in Kendall and the kid helping me was about to stand on the top rung, drill in one hand, trying to punch through brick for a wall plate. I stopped him because that's how you eat a sidewalk. Here's the real fix. Get yourself a masonry bit with a hex shank and run it off a right angle drill, or just use a hammer drill with the bit set short, and start the hole from a step ladder with both feet flat. I've done maybe 400 brick penetrations in 6 years and the ones that went bad all had the same setup, guy stretched out at the top of an extension ladder with nothing to brace against. The bit grabs, the drill kicks, and your shoulder follows it down. Cost me a sprained wrist back in 2019 and I still feel it when it rains. So what's your go to for brick when there's no way to reach it from the ground?
