Overheard a teenager say canceling someone is like a timeout for adults
I was waiting in line at a coffee shop in Portland last weekend and this girl told her friend that cancel culture is just a timeout until people forget. It got me thinking about how some influencers ride out the silence and pop back up like nothing happened. Do you think the internet actually forgets, or do they just get quiet enough to slide back in?

Wait til they figure out real adults just take that timeout and change their wifi password. This whole cancel thing feels more like a temporary inconvenience than actual accountability most of the time.

Honestly I gotta push back on that a little bit. Changing your wifi password isn't really a "real adult" move if you're trying to avoid consequences. That's more like a parent who grounds their kid but leaves the TV on in the living room. The whole point of these callouts is that the behavior itself is the problem, not just whether someone can still post. If you actually care about accountability, you'd want people to sit with the discomfort and maybe learn something, not just dodge it like a bad internet connection. Tbh saying "real adults just work around it" kinda misses that real accountability means owning the mess, not finding a clever way to keep doing whatever got you in trouble.
