That time a coworker told me to skip the first 3 episodes of a show and it changed everything

I was struggling to get into The Americans and kept dropping it after episode 2. My coworker Jen said "just start at episode 4, the pilot is slow and episode 3 is filler." I was skeptical but tried it and suddenly I was hooked immediately. Now I always check episode guides before starting a new series. Has anyone else jumped ahead in a show based on advice like that?

Had to choose between a used Doosan and a new Haas for my first real shop machine

I got a small shop space last year in a industrial park near Tacoma and needed my first real CNC mill. I had about $18,000 to spend and had to pick between a 2012 Doosan DNM 500 with 10,000 hours or a new Haas Mini Mill. The Haas was shiny and had warranty, but the Doosan was heavier built and had a bigger table. I went with the Doosan because a buddy who ran one in a production shop told me they just run forever if you keep the way covers clean. Six months in, I have had to replace a couple of limit switches and the coolant pump died last month. But the machine holds tolerance like a rock and I am already taking on bigger parts than a Mini Mill could handle. Has anyone else had to make this kind of used versus new decision and regretted it later?

Tried a wider toe clip on a tricky horse last Thursday and got weird results

I had this one horse that kept losing shoes on the left front, no matter what I did. So I decided to try a wider toe clip to give it more stability, thinking that was the obvious fix. Well, the shoe held on great but the horse started tripping like crazy on that foot for about 3 days. Turns out the extra clip changed how the hoof broke over at the toe, and it threw off his whole stride. I ended up going back to a standard clip but set it a little farther back from the toe, and that solved both problems. Has anyone else had a clip placement backfire like that on a specific gait issue?

Wasted $35 on a variant cover that was just a sticker

I picked up this 'limited variant' at my local shop in Austin for $35, thinking it was something special. Got it home and peeled back the corner to find it was just a sticker slapped on a regular cover, not even printed. Anyone else get burned by fake variants or am I just too trusting?

I finally bought a Fluke clamp meter after using cheap ones for 5 years

Picked up a Fluke 323 from the supply house last Tuesday for $180. My old Klein one was giving me wild readings on a 3-phase motor call. Turned out the old meter was off by like 8 amps on the highest range. The customer's VFD was actually fine, I just wasted 2 hours chasing a ghost. Anyone else have a cheap meter lie to them and cost time?

Wasted $80 on a cheap paint sprayer from Amazon for my kitchen cabinets

I figured I'd save time on my kitchen cabinet refinish by buying a budget HVLP sprayer online instead of renting one. After 3 attempts and a ton of cleanup, the finish looked like orange peel and my wife said it looked worse than the old cabinets. Ended up having to sand everything down and spend $65 to rent a proper sprayer from Home Depot for a day. Has anyone else here had bad luck with those cheap sprayers or is it just me?

Finally saw through Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop workout post

I used to buy into all those celeb wellness routines until I saw Gwyneth Paltrow post a video of herself doing this weird shake exercise. Then I noticed the same exact shake technique in a paid ad for her brand two days later... it was totally staged. That's when I realized half these social media fails aren't accidents, they're just hidden ads for their own products. Has anyone else caught a celeb recycling the same tip across different posts?

Hit 1,000 square feet of LVP in 6 hours flat yesterday

Had a small office install in Austin, 1,050 sq ft of click-lock luxury vinyl plank. Boss said it would take two days. I had it done before lunch. My back is killing me today but dang I never knew I could move that fast. Anyone else ever surprise themselves with how fast they can lay stuff down?

Overheard a young couple bragging about their "$20 a night" hostel in Rome and had to bite my tongue

I was sitting at a cafe last week and heard these two kids talking about how they found a hostel for 20 bucks a night near Termini station. They were so proud of themselves. But I know that area well and I bet that place has bedbugs and shared bathrooms with no hot water after 8 AM. I wanted to tell them that spending a little more, maybe 40 or 50 bucks, gets you a private room in a clean pensione with breakfast included. Has anyone else seen friends get burned by bargain hunting in big tourist cities?

Rant: Everyone swears by loan calculators but they nearly cost me 15 grand

I was refinancing my truck rig back in March at a credit union in Billings, Montana. The loan officer pulls up one of those online calculators and says I can save big by going with a 3 year term instead of 5. Sounded good on paper. But that calculator didn't factor in my irregular income from seasonal hauls. After 6 months I missed two payments because the higher monthly hit my slow months hard. The late fees and credit hit were brutal. I ended up calling the credit union direct and explaining my situation. They worked with me to switch to a 5 year term with no prepayment penalty. Now I just pay extra when I can and it works way better. Has anyone else had a loan calculator steer them wrong like that?
