Warning: my mentor told me to stop saying yes to extra work and it took me 2 years to figure out why
Honestly I used to think saying yes to everything was how you get ahead. About 2 years ago I was at a district training in Sacramento and a mentor teacher pulled me aside after I mentioned I was running the yearbook, coaching debate, and covering other classes during my prep. She asked me one question: what did you get praised for 6 months ago? I couldn't answer. I was doing tons of stuff but none of it could be pointed to on a resume or a review because it was all small favors that vanished the moment they were done. She told me to pick 2 things I actually wanted to be known for and say no to the rest, even if it felt rude. Within a year I had a leadership role that paid $4,000 more because I finally had time to do one thing well instead of ten things badly. If you're drowning in small tasks nobody remembers, how do you decide which ones to cut?
