Spent $1,400 on a career coach in Denver who just sent me YouTube links
I paid a coach in Denver $1,400 for 6 sessions back in January because I was stuck and scared I would never get promoted. She had a nice site and good reviews, but every call was her reading my resume out loud and sending me links to videos I could have found for free. Did anyone else get burned by a coach like this, and how did you check them out first?
The "reading my resume out loud" part hit me because that is exactly what happened to me. What worked for me was asking for a free 20 minute call before paying anything, and I told her upfront I wanted to hear one real piece of advice about my situation on that call. A good coach will give you something useful right there, even small. If they stay vague and keep saying "we will get into that in the sessions," that is your sign to walk. I also asked for the names of two past clients I could email, not just read reviews on her site. The coach who was worth it sent me two names in an hour. The one who was not worth it went quiet.
