Appreciation post: my old lead in Reno laughed at my story stick, then I watched him use one on a curved stair

Three jobs back I was cutting a set of winders in Reno and my lead saw my story stick leaning on the wall and called it a crutch for guys who can't read a tape. Two days later he's fighting a curved stringer and I catch him with a scrap of 1x2 marking tread lines off the wall. He never said a word about it, just kept going like nothing happened. Now I want to know who else got converted like that, what tool or trick did you write off until you caught yourself reaching for it?
