Update: guy on my crew keeps face nailing his rafter ties 3 inches off center
Watched him do it on 4 straight ties last Tuesday in a garage we're framing out in Boise, and when I asked he said the inspector in his old town never checked it. Now I'm second guessing myself on whether I'm the one being too picky about layout. Do you all snap a chalk line for ties or just eyeball off the plate?
The "inspector in his old town never checked it" line says it all. You snap a chalk line, every time. I don't care if it's a garage or a house, ties are structural and 3 inches off center is a fail in any jurisdiction I've worked. You're not being picky, you're being right.
Three inches off center means the tie isn't even catching the rafter the way it was engineered to, so you're basically relying on toenails and luck at that point. And the "old town inspector never checked it" excuse falls apart the second you sell that place, because the next guy's inspector is gonna flag every single one and now it's your problem again. Chalk line and a tape cost you ten minutes, @lewis.troy nailed it. Do it right the first time or pay for it twice.
