Thought those chimney pillows were a gimmick until a customer in Fargo showed me her gas bill
I always told folks to skip the $60 inflatable insert and just close the damper. Then this lady in Fargo pulled out two winters of bills and the thing cut her draft down enough to save about $200 a season. Now I'm not sure if I've been giving bad advice, or if it only works on certain flues. Anybody else run into this or am I the last one to come around?
Man I've been telling people to just shut the damper for years, so if you're the last one to come around then I'm right there with you holding the door open lol. My whole pitch was always "why pay 60 bucks for a balloon," and here this lady in Fargo is basically printing money off the thing. I wonder if it comes down to the flue itself, like a big old open fireplace probably leaks way more than a tight insert would. Seems to me the folks who need it most are the ones with a wide open throat and no glass doors. Guess I owe some customers an apology for being so sure of myself.
