Warning: got called out for skipping the smoke shelf on a 1920s brick chimney
I was at a supply counter in Lansing last Tuesday and a sweeper with 30 years in said something that stuck with me. He mentioned he charges an extra $75 on any chimney built before 1930 because guys rush the smoke shelf and the creosote builds up behind it. I used to treat that shelf as a quick scrape, but now I pull the vac hose back there first and check the damper frame too. Does anyone else add a flat fee for older masonry, or do you just build it into the regular price?
