My town's recycling center told me pizza boxes with grease go in the trash, and I believed them for two years

Turns out the grease doesn't matter if you tear off the oily part and compost it, which I learned from a volunteer in Ann Arbor last Saturday. Has anyone else found out their local guidelines were way stricter than they needed to be?
