I've been meaning to get a rain barrel for like 2 years but kept putting it off. My neighbor across the street in Portland has had one for maybe 4 years. Rant: Overheard a guy at the hardware store say solar panels are a scam because of his neighbor's broken inverter

I was grabbing some caulk and this older guy is telling the clerk how his neighbor spent 15 grand on panels and the inverter failed after 3 years. He was all smug like "see, told you. " I get it, inverters break. But my system in Tucson has been running fine for 5 years with zero issues. I wanted to say something but held back. I live in Portland and last month the city changed the pickup schedule without telling anyone. Had to pick between a rain barrel and a greywater system for my garden

Last spring I was setting up my backyard garden in Portland and I had to choose between a $60 rain barrel setup or a greywater diverter for my washing machine. I went with the rain barrel cause it seemed simpler. Hooked it up to my downspout with a hose and a spigot from Home Depot. After a month I noticed my tomatoes and peppers were loving the rainwater way more than tap water. But then we hit a dry spell in July and the barrel ran dry in like 3 days. Kicking myself for not going with the greywater option cause that would've kept my plants watered through the drought. Anyone else tried those greywater kits for laundry water?

We had a huge downpour last Tuesday, like 3 inches in a few hours. I walked around the block the next morning and noticed the rain gardens on my street were full of water, but the ones they put in 2 years ago had already drained. Bought one of those foldable solar panels thinking I'd charge my phone during hikes, but in real overcast conditions it barely put out enough to keep it from dying. That old farmer who told me to plant cover crops in winter was right after all

My neighbor Dave, who's been farming here for 40 years, kept saying I should plant winter rye every October. I figured it was a waste of seed and time. Last year I tried it on just one of my three acres near Springfield. That acre had way less erosion after the spring rains and the soil felt looser when I tilled in April. My other two acres were hard packed and took twice the water to get going. Has anyone else tried cover crops on a small scale and seen a real difference?

The solar panel mount that flew off my roof at 3 AM

Last Tuesday during that big windstorm, I heard this awful banging noise from upstairs around 2:30 AM (night shift life means I'm usually awake anyway). Went outside with a flashlight and found one of my DIY solar panel brackets had completely snapped at the bolt - the panel was just dangling by its wiring. Ended up having to climb up there at 3 AM with zip ties and a ratchet strap just to keep it from taking out my neighbor's car. Has anyone else had those cheap aluminum brackets fail on them, or did I just get a bad batch from the hardware store?
