My 5 years of cancelling callouts were based on a fake clip

I used to jump on every bad take thread until I dug into a 2019 clip of a comedian that got him cancelled. Turned out the audio was clipped mid-sentence and the full interview on a podcast in Ohio showed he was joking about the opposite thing. Now I check the original source before I even type, and I find I'm wrong about 1 in 10 posts I used to make. Has anyone else caught themselves roasting someone over a spliced video?

Wait till you start digging into the original context behind political soundbites too. I had this whole rant ready about a senator's quote on housing costs, then found the full speech where he was actually talking about a specific city's zoning laws, not the whole country. The worst part is when the fake version gets shared way more than the real one, so even after I post the correction, people still roast me for defending the guy. Getting to the source takes like 10 extra minutes most of the time, but it's saved me from looking dumb more times than I can count.

Honestly, I gotta disagree with you there @murphy.linda. Tbh, I’ve burned myself more times assuming the full quote is the whole truth, because even the “full speech” can be cherry-picked for tone or missing the follow-up question that changes everything. I’ve sat through committee hearings where a 20 minute answer gets clipped into a 10 second clip that still technically matches the transcript, but the meaning flips completely. Plus, people who share the fake version don’t care about your correction, they just want the rage. Ngl, sometimes the 10 extra minutes just gets you a different lie, just wrapped in a fancier source.
