Old timer in Detroit showed me a boring bar trick I still use
Back in 2008 I kept fighting chatter on a deep bore and this retired guy from GM told me to reverse my tool approach and grind a tiny radius on the insert. Took me 20 minutes to set up and it cut clean as glass. Anyone else pick up a fix like that from an old hand that still saves your shift?
Grinding that radius makes sense for chip flow but I gotta ask, did you take any off the top rake too? Some of those GM guys swore by changing the chip breaker angle more than the nose radius. Curious if you messed with the holder geometry or just the insert itself. Cause I tried something similar once on a 4140 bore and the radius alone didnt cut it. Took me three tries before I figured out the feed rate was fighting me more than the tool angle. What speeds were you running at when it finally stopped chattering?
Swapped in a different grade insert one time and the chatter disappeared on its own, go figure. Spent a whole shift blaming geometry when it was just the coating wearing weird.
