Tried bumping my feed rate 15% on 6061 and the finish came out worse, what gives?
Was running a batch of aluminum brackets on my Haas last Tuesday and figured I'd push the feed from 40 to 46 ipm to save some cycle time. Finish looked great off the tool but by the time I pulled parts the chatter marks showed up bad on the second op. Took me three scrap parts to realize the issue was my tool holder sticking out too far, not the speed itself. Pulled it back to 1.5 inches of gauge length and it ran clean at the faster rate. Anyone else run into chatter that only shows up after the part cools down?
Tool stickout kills more finishes than feed rate ever will. Learned that the hard way on a 1/2 inch end mill poking out 3 inches. Sounded fine, looked fine, then the finish was trash. Pulled it back to 1.75 and ran the same numbers clean. Rigidity first, speed second.
