Got roasted at my local shop for calling Wolverine an X-Men founding member
Was at Comix Connection in Mechanicsburg last Saturday argueing with a guy who pulled out X-Men #1 from 1963 to prove Wolverine wasn't in the original lineup and I just stood there red faced while the whole counter laughed, so does anyone else have a comic hill they died on that turned out totally wrong?
The part everyone skips is that "founding member" means two totally different things depending on if you're talking about the team in the comics or the team as a brand. In the comics, yeah, X-Men #1 is Xavier, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman, end of story. But Wolverine shows up in Giant-Size X-Men #1 in 1975 and basically every cartoon, movie, and lunchbox since then treats him like he was there from day one. Ask a random person on the street to name the original X-Men and half of them will say Wolverine before they say Angel. So you weren't wrong about the feeling, you were just wrong about the paperwork. That guy with the bagged and boarded copy knew exactly which hill he was standing on and he picked it on purpose.
