That guy at the con changed my mind about variant covers
I used to think variant covers were a total cash grab, especially the blank sketch ones that go for $50 plus. At a small show in Pittsburgh last spring, this older collector showed me his sketch cover drawn by a local artist, where he got the artist to doodle his own dog as the hero. He said it wasn't about the value, just the memory, and now I'm hunting for one to do the same with my cat. Anyone else ever get talked into a variant for the story behind it rather than the art itself?

Hold your wallet before you chase that feeling. That sketch cover is still a cash grab, just wrapped in a warm memory so you feel better about paying markup. The story is nice, but you could frame a photo of your cat for $10 and get the same daily reminder without hunting a rare book.
