That panel layout critique made me ditch double page spreads

I posted a 6 page preview on a critique board last Tuesday and one mod flagged how my double page spreads were killing pacing. She said my eye flow got lost on big splash pages, especially when I packed 14 panels into one spread. After I switched to single page grids with max 8 panels, my readership comments doubled on issue 3. It felt like giving up the big cinematic moments, but now I see the tension builds way better. Anyone else get told their action scenes read too fast because of layout choices?
