Took my nephew to Free Comic Book Day at the shop on 5th in Austin and the line killed the fun
Everyone hypes Free Comic Book Day like it's this amazing event but our shop on 5th Street in Austin had a line around the block by 9am and my nephew got maybe two books after 90 minutes of waiting. I get supporting local shops and all that but cramming a thousand people into a space the size of a garage just ruins it for actual fans. I'd rather pay $3 for the same floppy any other Saturday than fight a crowd of people who won't come back until next May. Does anyone else think the event has gotten way too big, or is it just the shops near me?
The part nobody talks about is how Free Comic Book Day trains casual people to expect free stuff and then they never come back anyway. Your nephew got two books after 90 minutes, but how many of those people in line were grabbing a freebie and walking out the door for good? I saw a guy at my shop load up a stack of 20 free books and ask where the bathroom was, no clue what a pull list even is. That's not building fans, that's a free sample table at Costco. The shops near you aren't the problem, the whole model is. They'd do better handing out one book per kid and putting the money they save into actual events.
