Just realized I'd been upvoting the worst take in every comment section for months
I always sorted by top comments and treated the most upvoted reply as the final word on whatever the post was about. Last week a video about a guy fixing his fence got 40k likes on a comment saying his neighbor was legally required to pay half, and I nodded along like an idiot. Then a contractor replied way down at the bottom with the actual law cited, and it turned out the top comment was dead wrong in most states. I scrolled back through my history and found at least 15 arguments where I'd sided with the crowd just because the number next to the comment was big. What broke the spell was one thread where the top reply had 12k likes and the guy below it with 3 likes posted a screenshot that made the top guy look like a clown. Now I sort by controversial first and it's like reading a whole different site. The funny part is the wrong comments are usually written better, which is probably why they win. Does anyone else sort by controversial on purpose, or am I just making my feed worse for no reason?
Wait, 40k likes on a totally wrong comment about fence law and nobody checked? That's wild. The part that gets me is the guy with 3 likes dropping the screenshot, like how is the truth always buried at the bottom lol.
