Changed my mind about dry suits after the Puget Sound job
I used to think dry suits were overkill for shallower work, figured a wet suit and grit got the job done. Last month we were doing a pipeline inspection in Tacoma, water temp read 48 and my core shut down after 40 minutes, I could barely grip my tools. The lead diver let me borrow his spare and the difference was night and day, no shake, clear head, finished the whole shift. Now I'm saving up for my own, anyone else make the switch late and regret not doing it sooner?
48 degrees and your core shut down in 40 minutes? That is colder than I would have guessed for that area, even in winter. Grip going out is no joke, once your hands stop working you are done no matter how tough you think you are. The bigger surprise to me is the lead diver just handing over his spare like that, those things are not cheap to lend out. Good on him, and good on you for taking the lesson the safe way instead of the hard way.
