Appreciation post: my uncle in Boise told me to stop making extra payments and I can't tell if he's right
My uncle ran a hardware store in Boise for 30 years and paid off his house early. Last month he told me making extra payments on my truck loan was dumb because the rate is 4.9% and I should put that money in a savings account instead. I said paying it off early saves real money and cuts risk if work slows down. He said cash on hand beats a paid off truck when a job dries up. Now I'm second guessing every extra $200 I send in. What would you do with a 4.9% loan and $200 a month extra?
