Why does nobody talk about RAID card batteries dying quietly and taking the array with them?
Had a client in Mesa call me 3 weeks ago. Server was running fine. No alarms. Then one morning the array showed up raw and 4 years of QuickBooks was gone.
Pulled the card. Battery was dead. It had been dead a long time. Write-back cache kept the thing fast right up until it didn't, and the power went out during a backup window.
Replaced the battery, restored from tape (yes, tape, they still had it). Cost them 2 days of downtime and a lot of stress.
Now I check battery dates on every RAID card I touch. Most of them are older than the servers they're in.
Any of you have a good way to flag this for clients who never want to pay for a checkup?
