Tried a 6 inch slump mix on a driveway pour in Boise and it set up faster than my 4 inch mix
Everyone swears you need a stiff mix for flatwork but this one finished cleaner with way less water chasing. Now I'm wondering if half my edge work problems over the years were just me fighting the mix instead of working with it. What slump are you all running for residential flatwork and why?
Sorry but a 6 inch slump setting faster than a 4 doesn't really prove much on its own. A lot of that comes down to mix design, admixtures, ambient temp, and how hot that Boise sun was cooking the slab. You can take two batches from different plants with the same slump and get totally different set times, so saying wetter is better for flatwork based on one pour is a stretch. Not saying a stiff mix is always right either, but the reason guys push for lower slump is less bleed water and less shrinkage cracking once it cures, not just because they like to suffer. Sounds like you had a good day and a good mix, which is great, but I wouldn't throw out the whole playbook over it.
