Spent $400 on a night vision monocular for rooftop surveillance, biggest regret of my investigation
I was tracking a suspected fake news operation out of a warehouse off Route 9 in Jersey last fall and figured the tech would give me an edge on their night shifts, but the image tube just fuzzed out on every streetlight and the battery died after 90 minutes. Cost me $400 plus a tow when my car got boxed in by their security detail while I was fiddling with the focus ring. Has anyone else dropped real cash on surveillance gear that ended up being more liability than proof?

Man, $400 for a fog machine with a battery life shorter than my morning coffee is a rough way to learn that lesson. Night vision gear in the consumer price range is basically a toy dressed up like spy tech, and streetlights are its kryptonite. Next time put that money toward a decent dash cam and a burner phone, you'll get more usable proof and way less tow truck drama.
