Hot take: paper daily logs vs an app on my phone, which one actually saves you time at the end of the day?
Two summers back I was running a 3 man crew doing exterior work and I did everything on paper. Little spiral notebook in my vest, wrote down start times, material counts, who showed up late, all of it. Problem was every Friday I'd sit at the kitchen table for two hours retyping it into a spreadsheet for the GC, and half the pages were smudged from rain or sweat. Then I tried a cheap app on my phone for about $30 a month and honestly the first month was worse, guys kept asking me to repeat stuff and I'd forget to hit save. But by month three I was texting the same numbers straight from the truck before I even pulled out of the driveway. The thing nobody warns you about is the paper never dies, you still need a backup when your phone gets cracked or the signal drops out in a basement. So which side are you on, do you keep a paper trail just in case or have you gone all in on the app and never looked back?
I ran into the same wall when I was doing side work on weekends, paper was great in the moment but the Friday retyping nearly killed me. What finally stuck for me was a hybrid thing, quick voice notes on my phone during the day for times and counts, then dump it into a real log at night or the next morning when I actually had five minutes. The paper notebook stayed in the truck as backup, mostly for when my hands were too gross to touch a screen or the signal died. It took me maybe a month to stop forgetting to record stuff, so that rough first stretch is real and not just you. Your mileage may vary but going half and half saved me more time than either one alone.
