inRant: my grandma's percolator vs the $22 pour over kit I use now
Gotta disagree on the percolator hiding bad beans. That burnt edge didn't hide anything, it just covered up the good stuff with ash. My mom still runs her old Farberware and I've had cups from it that taste like licking a campfire, and she uses decent beans. A drip cone lets you actually taste what you paid for, so the switch makes sense to me. The one old thing I keep is a beat up cast iron skillet, because nothing new holds heat like that thing does.

inDAE set a $40 a week grocery cash limit and suddenly stopped buying dumb stuff
Man, I always thought cash limits were overkill but this makes me get it.

inShowerthought: I paid $40 for one of those 'as seen on TV' itch relief gadgets and it did nothing
That "burnt toast" detail is doing a lot of work here, because that smell is actually the thing that should scare people more than the wasted money. What nobody brings up is how these gadgets can scorch the top layer of skin and leave you with a dark patch that looks way worse than whatever hair you were trying to get rid of. @cooper.phoenix your mom got off easy with just a bad smell, some folks end up at a dermatologist paying ten times the price of the gadget to fix the damage. So yeah, the real cost of those 3am ads isn't the 60 bucks, it's the cleanup bill nobody warns you about.
