Tried that color depositing mask everyone raves about and it turned my blonde client green

Last month I used a popular purple mask on my regular who's been getting balayage for 2 years. She wanted to tone down the brass. I left it on for 5 minutes like the jar said and when I rinsed it off her highlights were straight up greenish. Had to do a baking soda scrub and re tone her with a different product. Took an extra 40 minutes and I felt terrible. I think it was because her hair had some old minerals from well water or something. Anyone else have a color mask backfire on you like this? What did you do to fix it?

Had a similar thing happen with a client who had been doing bayalage for years and her ends were just too porous. I used a pink toning mask to neutralize some green tones from hard water and it turned her ends purple-ish gray. Never doing that again. I just mixed a bit of demi permanent color with a neutral shade and it fixed it but it was a full extra hour of work. Felt awful too, you're not alone in that.

Nina, did you check the porosity level before slapping that pink mask on? I'm wondering if there's a specific test we should be doing first to avoid this mess. Because clearly the jar instructions aren't warning us about porous ends reacting like that.
