Warning: dropped $65 on a 1000 prompt mega pack and 90% of them were 'a character walks into a room'
Bought the pack off a writing discord last month thinking it would fill my idea notebook for a year, but flipping through it in a coffee shop in Denver I realized most were one liners with no twist, so now I just want to know what you all do when a prompt is too vague to actually start anything.
Sixty five bucks for 1000 prompts is like 6 cents each, and honestly that sounds fair to me. A prompt saying "a character walks into a room" is not a bad prompt, it is a starting block, and the whole point is that YOU bring the twist. Every writing class I have ever taken hands out stuff that vague on purpose, because if the prompt already has the cool idea baked in, you are just filling in blanks instead of writing. The mega pack gave you volume, and volume is what gets you to the good ones, the same way you flip through 50 bad songs to find one you love. If you want a prompt that does all the work for you, you are not really looking for a prompt, you are looking for someone else to write your story. Next time open the pack, pick a boring line, and force yourself to add one weird detail, boom, that is your twist and it came from you.
