My cousin saw my 2009 Facebook photos with the duck-face phase and I still think the reactions were worse than the poses
Last weekend my cousin pulled up my old Facebook album on her phone at a family cookout in Toledo and I braced for the usual cringe, but what got me was the comment section, not the duck lips. I counted 34 photos from one night in 2010 where I captioned every single one with song lyrics, and 12 people replied with "LOL" and nothing else. Here is my real gripe with the whole cringe culture thing in this group, and I know it will not be popular: the posted photos are not the worst part, it is the comments we left on each other's stuff, and lately this community only laughs at the pics. My cousin had a pic of me in a fedora captioned with a Drake lyric and I felt nothing, but scrolling past my old reply to her photo that just said "sooo pretty girlll" with four hearts made me put my phone face down on the picnic table. I think we give photos a pass because everyone took bad ones, but the comments show how hard we were all trying to be liked, and that is the part that actually stings years later. Just a thought. Does the comment section get anyone else worse than the actual posts do?
Ngl the "sooo pretty girlll" with four hearts is a war crime I would also hide my phone over. My version was commenting "gorgeous babe!!!" under like 20 pics in a row in 2011, which basically means I was running a full time job as everyone's hype man. At least the duck lips only lasted a few months, those comments are forever and Facebook even shows the date so you can watch yourself peak at being thirsty for likes. Funny part is we all thought we were being so sweet and now it reads like a desperate audition tape for friendship. The pics we can blame on being young and dumb, the comments we gotta blame on being young and really, really needy.
