I swore I'd never build a house with a slab foundation, then I poured one in Boise last month
Three years ago I watched a guy in Nampa fight a cracked slab for a whole summer, and I walked away saying I'd only ever frame on a crawl space. Last month I poured a post tension slab for a 2,400 sq ft build off Chinden Blvd and the whole thing went down in two days with zero drama. The kicker was the quote from my concrete sub: a crawl space was going to run me about $14,000 more after I added up the extra excavation, stem walls, and floor framing. Going slab also cut almost three weeks off the schedule, which mattered because the owners had a lease running out. I still think slabs are a bad call on certain soils, so I'm not fully converted. Anybody here switched one way or the other after seeing real numbers on their own job?
Did the same thing on a duplex in Meridian two years back after swearing off slabs, and the savings came out almost the same as yours once I added up stem walls and floor joists. The post tension part is what sold me, since the engineer spec'd it for our clay and we have not seen a hairline crack yet. Get a soil report first though, because I would not pour one on the wrong dirt no matter how cheap it looks.
