My framer showed up 3 days late because his truck died, and it saved me $1,400
Had the foundation poured and my framer was set to start last Monday at 7am. He calls me at 6:40 saying his truck won't start in the driveway, so he's stuck. I'm fuming because the concrete guy already left and I'm paying for a porta potty by the day. Turns out the delay pushed framing to Thursday, which was the same day the lumber yard dropped their prices on 2x6s by about 15 percent. I ended up saving $1,400 on the package because I wasn't locked in on Monday's quote. Has anyone else had a sub's bad luck actually work out in your favor on a build?
Wouldn't the bigger lesson be to just not lock in a lumber quote until the day before you actually need it? I mean yeah his truck dying was pure luck but you could basically do that on purpose every time if you're not in a rush. Maybe it's just me but watching prices for a week before committing seems smarter than hoping someone's truck breaks down.
