Walked through an 80s custom build in Austin last week

The framing was all true 2x6 with no engineered lumber anywhere, but the real eye-opener was how open the floor plan felt without any steel beams. They just stacked load points cleverly. Anyone else find older custom homes beat modern ones on that front or is it just me?
