Debate: was that week of nonstop phishing attempts a test or just bad luck?

Honestly, I had a week where every single day I got like 5 sketchy emails claiming my account was locked. Some were super obvious typos but a few looked almost real. My boss said it was a targeted attack from some random hacker group. But my coworker thinks it was just a spam wave hitting everyone at once. Which side do you lean on and has anyone else had a streak like that?

Three years ago I got hit with 47 phishing emails in one week (literally counted them). Turned out a data leak from a old forum I used had my email in a hacker spreadsheet. My advice is to check haveibeenpwned dot com and see if any of your accounts got leaked. Also forward those sketchy emails to your IT guy even if they look fake, because sometimes the real ones hide in the noise. I actually caught a fake "HR benefits update" that way that was using the same template as the real HR emails.

My cousin got hit so bad his printer started spamming fake invoices.

Ha! That's wild, @averywilliams - a buddy of mine had his smart fridge start ordering pizza delivery after a ransomware attack.
