My old password manager finally got the boot after 7 years
I was reading a thread here on monday and someone casually mentioned that the app I had been using since college was bought out by a company with no public security audits. I checked my login history and saw attempts from three different states, all blocked, but it still creeped me out enough to move everything over to a new tool. Took me two evenings to switch 40 plus accounts and I had to reset a bunch that I forgot the master password for. Has anyone else realized they were holding onto an app just because it was familiar, not because it was safe?
The "just because it was familiar" part hits hard. I did the same thing with an old notes app where I kept a bunch of passwords in plain text. I knew it was dumb but I kept telling myself I would move them "next week" for like two years. Then my phone did that thing where it backs everything up to the cloud without asking, and I realized all my logins were sitting in some folder I could not even find. Moving 40 plus accounts sounds painful but honestly the reset part is what wakes you up. You find out how many old accounts you never use anymore, and those are the ones you should just delete instead of updating.
