The splatter guard actually made things worse somehow

I put one of those mesh splatter screens over my fryer basket last Sunday and the oil still ended up all over the counter, plus the screen itself got so greasy I almost dropped it in the sink. Turns out the mesh just traps steam and pushes droplets sideways instead of straight up, which I only figured out after wiping down my backsplash for 20 minutes. Has anyone else had the splatter guard trick them into a false sense of safety, or is it just me?
