Why does everyone crowd the basket full? Made this mistake again at 9pm

Overloaded the basket with wet batter and got a grease volcano that coated my whole kitchen counter in oil, took 40 minutes to scrub down. Has anyone else learned the hard way that half full is the only way to go, or am I the only one who keeps doing this?
