Drove 45 minutes to a theater showing the alternate cut of Blade Runner, only to find out they just played the regular one

So last month I saw a listing at a small indie theater in Pasadena for a 'rare alternate ending screening' of Blade Runner. I grabbed my buddy, drove 45 minutes through traffic, paid $18 each, and sat down all excited. About two hours in, I realized this was just the regular theatrical cut. No extra scenes, no different ending. I asked the guy at the counter after, and he said 'oh, we couldn't get the rights to the alt version, so we just showed the normal one.' I was so mad. I looked it up later and the actual alternate ending is only on some old DVD release from 2007. Has anyone else ever shown up to a 'special screening' that turned out to be a total letdown? How do you vet these things before you waste a whole evening?
