Got roasted for my deleted scene takes, now I watch every cut with a notepad

Last month a buddy called me out after I said a deleted scene was better than the theatrical cut without even seeing the full context. He pointed out I was judging 30 seconds of footage without knowing what got cut around it. Now I sit down with a notepad and track the runtime, the pacing, and what the scene actually does for character motivation before I say anything. It takes like 15 extra minutes per movie but I catch way more stuff, like how that extended dinner scene in Heat changes the whole tone of the final shootout. Anyone else had their opinion flipped after going back and watching the full deleted sequence with director commentary on?

That notepad habit carries over to everything else too, not just movies. Once you start checking the full story before judging a piece of it, you stop being so quick to slam people's choices in real life.
