Choosing between a solid wood and a laminate countertop for the kitchen redo

When we redid our kitchen two years back, I had to pick between a solid maple butcher block and a basic laminate top. The laminate was about $400 for the whole run, but the wood was closer to $900. I went with the maple, thinking it would age nicely with some character. It's held up okay, but I'm sanding and oiling it every six months to keep it from looking rough. Anyone have a laminate counter that's actually lasted a decent while without looking terrible?

Actually, laminate can last a long time if you get a decent grade. The cheap stuff dents and burns easy, but a good quality sheet holds up to daily use. My parents have had theirs for fifteen years and it still looks fine.

Yeah, but "holds up to daily use" is a bit of a stretch for laminate. It can't handle water spills or real wood's feel, you know?

Man, I feel your pain, and @the_patricia has a point about the feel.
