My uncle's 'just use a level' advice backfired spectacularly last weekend

So my Uncle Bob, who has built like 3 decks in his life, told me to skip the laser and just use his old 4-foot level for my pantry shelves. I followed his advice, but apparently that thing is bent by like a quarter inch from being dropped. Now all my shelves slope slightly to the left and every jar of spaghetti sauce rolls off onto the floor. Has anyone else had a tool that was secretly ruined before they even started?
