Got desperate on a Friday and used a paperclip to fix a stuck plotter pen

I was trying to finish a set of elevation drawings for a client in Boise and the pen carriage on my old HP plotter just froze up. I bent a paperclip into a tiny hook, fished it into the mechanism, and somehow nudged the jammed part free. Has anyone else had to improvise a fix like that on a deadline?

Paperclip fixes are a rite of passage. I once used a guitar pick to realign the feed rollers on a wide format printer. Another time, a binder clip became a temporary tension bar for a loose cable inside a scanner. You do what you have to when the clock is ticking and the tech is two days out. It feels good when a dumb fix actually works.

Honestly, the best fixes always look like you're just making a bigger mess.
