Cutting cable on a job in Memphis and the shear just snapped clean in half

This was two weeks ago on a Tuesday morning. I was about 30 feet into a 200 foot run of 3/4 inch cable on a bank job in Memphis and my cable shear just gave up. Snapped right at the hinge. Never seen that before. Had to drive 20 minutes to a rental place to get a backup and wasted half the morning. The old one was a Klein I've had for maybe 5 years. Anyone else had a tool just break at the worst possible time?

Snapped right at the hinge" - that is just wild. I've had Kleins for years and never seen one break like that. Must have been a bad heat treat on that batch or something. Five years is not that old for a shear that gets used maybe once a week. That would have ruined my whole day too, having to run to a rental place and mess up the morning timeline.

Snapped right at the hinge" is just how everything breaks these days, isn't it? Seems like nothing's built to last past the warranty anymore, even the good brands.

Whoa, "bad heat treat on that batch" is exactly what @hernandez.blake said, and honestly it sent a chill down my spine. Five years of once-a-week use snapping like that is way too soon. I've got tools from my dad that are older than me and still work fine. Makes you wonder if they cheaped out on the metal in that particular run. I'd be writing a strongly worded email to the company, that's for sure. A hinge failure on a shear is a major safety hazard waiting to happen.
