Old timer told me to run the cutter slow and let the weight do the work, I fought it for 6 months
When I started on the Mississippi River back in April, this guy named Ray with 30 years on the dredge kept saying I was pushing too hard, that I'd burn through teeth faster and mess up the cut. I figured he was stuck in his ways, so I kept my RPMs up and pushed harder, and sure enough I had to swap a full set of cutter teeth every 3 weeks instead of every 7 like the manual says. Last month I finally tried his way, dropped the RPMs by about 400, let the hull weight carry it, and my production actually went up 15 percent on the same stretch of sand. So now I'm wondering, how many of you run by the old school rules vs what the equipment specs say, and has anyone else seen better results going against the paper? I'm half mad I wasted 6 months and probably a few hundred bucks in steel because I wouldn't listen.

Thats a tough lesson but at least Ray was patient enough to keep telling you.
